Domestic Violence & Firearms

Through These Doors is heartbroken by the recent events surrounding gun violence. Our hearts break because we know these acts of violence were preventable. As leaders in violence prevention and response, we call on community leaders to respond, repair and work towards preventing damage caused by violence. TTD is committed to raising awareness around the connections between mass violence and intimate partner violence and how policy and access to firearms contributes to these tragedies.

Ending gun violence is a critical piece in ending domestic violence. We know that the presence of a firearm in an intimate partner violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%*. Through These Doors supports firearms legislation to ensure that those with an intent to harm cannot access firearms. Some of this legislation includes: the House-passed Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R. and the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R.1446).

We cannot keep ignoring the link between gun violence and intimate partner violence. We cannot keep ignoring the facts and hoping for a different outcome.

If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, Through These Doors serves those in Cumberland County, Maine. TTD’s helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
